Nigerian diaspora movements OBIdient and Kwankwasiyya unite for democratic renewal

Leaders from the OBIdient and Kwankwasiyya movements within the Nigerian diaspora have established a new partnership focused on fostering democratic engagement and advancing national development. This collaboration was formalized during the inaugural OBIdient–Kwankwasiyya Global Diaspora Conference, held in Doncaster, United Kingdom.

The conference brought together Nigerians from various continents, including Europe, Africa, and North America, with both in-person and virtual attendees. Participants resolved to enhance cooperation and mobilize Nigerians living abroad to increase their involvement in their home country's affairs. The event was jointly organized by OBIdient Movement Europe and the Kwankwasiyya Movement Diaspora.

This conference is about building bridges, encouraging dialogue and working together as Nigerians who believe in a better future for our country.

Organizers stated the conference aimed to stimulate dialogue and constructive engagement regarding Nigeria's democratic future. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, addressed the attendees virtually. Prominent figures from both movements, including Dr. Yunusa Tanko (National Coordinator, OBIdient Movement) and Dr. Muhammed Hamisu (Leader, Kwankwasiyya Movement Diaspora), also spoke.

Damola Adebayo, OBIdient Lead for Europe, highlighted the conference as the start of stronger cooperation among Nigerians committed to accountable governance. He emphasized shared responsibility for contributing positively to Nigeria's development, despite the movements' different histories. Participants agreed that the diaspora plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy through peaceful political involvement, knowledge sharing, and professional contributions. The conference concluded with resolutions to improve communication among diaspora networks and sustain initiatives encouraging active participation in Nigeria's democratic process.
