Nigerian opposition parties rally for Governor Makinde's 2027 presidential bid

In Ekiti State, Nigeria, stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) have initiated grassroots mobilization efforts, signaling a concerted push for Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde's presidential aspirations in the 2027 general election.

The campaign, convened by PDP chieftain Mrs. Lanre Fajuyi, aims to strengthen the PDP-APM alliance and rally support for Makinde, who has formally declared his intention to contest the presidency on the APM platform. This coalition is being presented as a viable opposition capable of challenging the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC).

We need a government that is genuinely ready and willing to assist the masses and provide democratic governance that will serve the interests of the people.

Fajuyi articulated the movement's motivation, stating a desire to mobilize Nigerians around a "credible alternative" to the current administration. She emphasized the public's yearning for a government that prioritizes the interests of the masses, upholds democratic governance, and addresses the nation's economic and social challenges. Governor Makinde, she believes, embodies the leadership Nigeria requires at this critical juncture.

Chief Sanya Atofarati, spokesperson for the South-west PDP/APM alliance, highlighted the partnership as a strategic move to preserve multi-party democracy and establish a robust opposition platform. He noted the necessity of exploring alternative avenues, particularly given internal challenges within the PDP, and described the APM as a growingly influential opposition force in Ekiti, providing a vehicle for various political actors.
