Nigerian Pro-Chancellors Champion AI, Digital Governance in Universities

The Committee of Pro-Chancellors of State-Owned Universities (COPSUN) has issued a crucial directive to Nigerian universities, advocating for the immediate establishment of Artificial Intelligence and digital governance committees. This move signals a proactive approach to integrating advanced technologies into the administration and operations of higher education institutions across the nation. The committee, in its 8th Biennial conference held in Kano State, emphasized that embracing AI and digital governance is not merely an option but a necessity for driving responsible adoption and ensuring the future readiness of our universities.

Beyond technological integration, COPSUN has also sounded the alarm on the sustainability of university education in Nigeria. Chairman Prof. Ayodeji Omole highlighted the need for both federal and state governments to significantly increase their support. This includes a call for universities to develop robust digital integrity strategies, covering finance, academic processes, and data protection. The committee's recommendations extend to fostering collaboration with anti-graft and intelligence agencies for enhanced server security and intelligence sharing, underscoring a commitment to transparency and accountability in managing university affairs.

The overarching goal is to strengthen governance structures, enhance research and development, transform research outputs into viable innovations through intellectual property offices, and ultimately ensure that Nigerian state-owned universities remain globally competitive. This push for modernization and strategic development is vital for the nation's intellectual and economic progress.
