Nigerian Students' Union Seeks Campus Closure Over Election Security Fears

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Southwest Zone D has demanded the temporary closure of all tertiary institutions in Osun State. This call comes ahead of the state's governorship election, scheduled for August 15, due to escalating security concerns. The student body issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Osun State Government, security agencies, and institutional heads. They require a meeting with student leaders to discuss safeguarding students during the election period.

Our concern is simple: students are innocent members of society. They should never become victims of political violence because they chose to pursue an education in Osun State.

Comrade Adeyemo Josiah, the NANS Southwest Zone D Coordinator, stated that the decision was made after consulting with student leadership structures across the state. He cited reports from Students' Union Governments and campus leaders highlighting rising political tensions in areas where many students live. "Our concern is simple: students are innocent members of society. They should never become victims of political violence because they chose to pursue an education in Osun State," Josiah said.

Josiah clarified that the recommendation is a precautionary measure, not a political statement. "This recommendation is not intended to interfere with the statutory powers of institutional authorities or government. Rather, it is a precautionary measure made solely in the interest of protecting lives," he asserted. He stressed that while academic schedules can be adjusted, lost lives cannot be recovered. "Academic calendars can be reviewed. Lectures can be rescheduled. Examinations can be postponed. But the life of a student cannot be replaced. We would rather take preventive action today than mourn avoidable losses tomorrow," he added.
