Night garbage collections offer relief but added challenges

To combat punishing heatwaves, some sections of the island are now collecting garbage after dark. This shift in schedule aims to provide relief for sanitation workers who would otherwise be exposed to extreme temperatures during the day.

However, the nighttime collection presents its own set of challenges and dangers for the workers. Poor visibility increases the risk of accidents, especially around parked vehicles. Additionally, improperly discarded items can pose a significant injury hazard in the low light conditions.

Audley Gordon, Executive Director of the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), confirmed that the agency has adapted collection schedules in certain areas. These adjustments allow workers to operate at night when feasible, prioritizing their safety and well-being while ensuring continued service delivery amidst the challenging weather conditions.
