Nik Mohamad Abduh reappointed as senator

Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz has returned to Malaysia’s Senate for a second term, taking his oath before Senate President Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah at Parliament.

The former Bachok member of Parliament was reselected by the Kelantan legislative assembly under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution. His three-year term began on July 7, 2026, and will run until July 6, 2029. He previously served as a senator representing Kelantan from July 8, 2023, to July 7, 2026, and has also represented Pasir Mas and Bachok in Parliament.

Awang Bemee said the reappointment reflected continuing confidence in Nik Mohamad Abduh’s integrity, experience and ability to contribute to Senate proceedings. He said the oath carried a major responsibility: defending the Federal Constitution, serving the public interest and ensuring that the voices of every state received an appropriate place in national policymaking and lawmaking.

Awang Bemee said Nik Mohamad Abduh’s experience from his first term could help strengthen the Senate, represent Kelantan’s voice and scrutinize national policies and legislation. He also reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to strengthening Malaysia’s legislative institutions, including through enforcement of the Parliamentary Service Act.

He said that measure would reinforce the separation of powers, improve checks and balances, and strengthen Parliament’s autonomy and standing. “A strong Parliament will strengthen democracy, and a strong democracy will bring more responsible governance,” he said. The Senate’s next sitting is scheduled to last 14 days from Nov. 30, according to the parliamentary calendar.
