NiMet predicts 3-day rains, sunshine from Saturday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts a varied weather pattern across the nation from Saturday to Monday, featuring a combination of sunshine and rainfall. The agency's outlook indicates that the northern part of the country will experience sunny skies with scattered clouds throughout the weekend.

Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur; the public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.

Isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rains are predicted for parts of Taraba State in the afternoon or evening. Meanwhile, the North Central region is expected to have a cloudy atmosphere with intermittent sunshine during the forecast period.

In the southern regions, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are anticipated. NiMet predicts chances of thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States. Later in the day, there are prospects of thunderstorms with moderate rains over several southern states, including Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Driving under heavy rain should be avoided. Disconnect electrical appliances from electrical sockets. Stay away from tall trees to avoid being struck by falling branches or broken branches.

NiMet also issued a cautionary advisory, noting that strong winds may precede thunderstorms. The public is urged to take precautions, such as fastening loose objects and avoiding driving in heavy rain. Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for operational planning. Temperatures are expected to remain high, prompting advice to wear breathable clothing and stay in cool environments.
