Nine Arrested in Turkey Over 'Hats' Organized Crime Group Shootings

Turkish police have apprehended nine individuals suspected of belonging to the "Şapkalılar" (Hats) organized crime group, following a string of armed assaults in Istanbul. The arrests came after an investigation into shootings that targeted a company and a residential building within a single week.

The initial incident occurred on August 7 in Seyrantepe Mahallesi, where an assailant fired shots at an advertising and digital printing company before fleeing. Security camera footage captured the attack. Just one day later, a residential building in Şirintepe Mahallesi was also targeted by gunfire. Investigators from the Robbery Bureau of the Police Department's Security Branch determined that both shootings were carried out by members of the same criminal organization.

Further investigation, coordinated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's Organized Crimes Investigation Bureau, revealed the "Şapkalılar" group's extensive operations. The group is implicated in at least four distinct criminal acts. These include the wounding of an individual named M.E. in Beyoğlu on July 31, a wounding and threat incident in Milli Egemenlik Park in Avcılar Yeşilkent Mahallesi on August 3, and the two aforementioned shootings on August 7 and 8.

Authorities have determined that the "Şapkalılar" group is active not only across Turkey but also internationally. The group's leader is reportedly residing abroad, and several high-ranking members are subjects of red notices, indicating international wanted status. The recent arrests are part of a broader effort to dismantle the organization's network and activities.
