Nine Incumbent Mayors in Caaguazú Win Primaries, Vie for Re-election

In the department of Caaguazú, Paraguay, nine incumbent mayors have successfully secured their party nominations, positioning them to compete for re-election in the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for October 4. These internal party elections, which determined the candidates for the general polls, saw a strong turnout in several districts and concluded without significant incidents.

Of the nine mayors seeking another term, six are affiliated with the National Republican Association (ANR), commonly known as the Colorado Party. These include Marcos Benítez in Coronel Oviedo, Leonardo Fabio in Cecilio Báez, Luis Palacios in San Joaquín, Hugo Franco in Tembiaporã, Gilmar Da Silva in Nueva Toledo, and Carlos Godoy in Repatriación. The Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) will have three incumbent mayors running for re-election: Manolo Solís in Nueva Londres, Eduardo Giménez Miltos in La Pastora, and Juan Carlos Amarilla in Simón Bolívar.

In the departmental capital, Coronel Oviedo, the current mayor Marcos Benítez of the ANR secured a decisive victory in his party's primary, garnering 13,519 votes against Elvio Castro's 8,315 and Roly Gaona's 3,598. Meanwhile, in the PLRA's internal race for Coronel Oviedo's mayoral candidacy, current municipal councilor Rosana Bogado emerged as the winner with 4,685 votes, surpassing René Ávalos's 1,693.

In the district of Caaguazú itself, Raquel Alvarenga of the ANR won her primary with a substantial 8,858 votes, significantly outperforming her internal rival Víctor Fretes, who received only 337 votes. For the PLRA in Caaguazú, Alejo Ríos was confirmed as the party's candidate after securing 5,408 votes. In J. Eulogio Estigarribia, Stanley Hildebrand clinched the ANR candidacy with 4,556 votes, while Nelson Navarro secured the PLRA nomination with 2,037 votes.
