Niš launches tender for three-year air quality monitoring

Niš, Serbia – In a move that acknowledges long-standing concerns over air quality, the city of Niš has initiated a tender for a comprehensive three-year monitoring program. This initiative, set to run from 2026 to 2028, will deploy measurement equipment across 11 key locations, encompassing sensitive areas like kindergartens "Maslačak" and "Crvenkapa," as well as heavily trafficked and industrial zones such as Bulevar 12. februar and Sinđelićev trg. The program mandates detailed monthly, annual, and a final three-year report, which will include analyses of pollutant impacts on human health and recommendations for mitigation. This proactive step is particularly significant given the recent warnings from experts regarding the severe health consequences of air pollution and the public's growing frustration, which has even led to criminal complaints against the mayor for alleged inaction. While Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović has previously admitted the existence of pollution problems, the city's commission for air quality improvement has also proposed measures like mandatory filters for restaurant chimneys. The tender process, expected to conclude by May 19, will not only reveal the chosen monitoring provider but also the financial scope of this crucial environmental undertaking.
