North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the sea off its east coast on Wednesday, South Korean and Japanese authorities reported. While North Korea has not officially commented on the Wonsan launch, Pyongyang has previously criticized the nuclear ambitions of South Korea and Japan. South Korean officials noted that North Korea fired another ballistic missile from Wonsan on August 6, a test that may not have met its intended objectives, according to Hong. This year's tests have predominantly featured short-range ballistic missiles, artillery rockets, and other tactical weapons. South Korean assessments indicate Wednesday's launch was the 11th suspected ballistic missile test by North Korea in 2026.

South Korean and Japanese defense authorities reported the missile traveled approximately 700 km (435 miles). The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul has not yet classified it as a short-range ballistic missile, pending a detailed analysis. Analysts suggest the missile's range, trajectory, and launch site could indicate a hypersonic missile or potentially a submarine-launched variant. Both South Korea and Japan have strongly condemned the launch. Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi stated that Japan lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels. South Korea's Office of National Security convened an emergency meeting, expressing concern and urging Pyongyang to cease provocations that violate UN Security Council resolutions.
