North Macedonia declares disease outbreak after hundreds poisoned by suspected contaminated water

Health authorities in North Macedonia have declared a disease outbreak in a region near Skopje after hundreds of people sought medical treatment for suspected poisoning, with the local water supply being the primary suspect. The situation has led to a significant health crisis in Gostivar, a town located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of the capital.

Since Friday, officials have been advising residents not to consume the municipal water supply. Hospital records show over 1,500 cases of gastroenteritis have been reported. Epidemiologist Zorica Zafirovska from the Tetovo Public Health Center confirmed the outbreak in the Gostivar municipality, noting that while the exact source of infection is still under investigation, tests are being conducted on the water supply.

The surge in gastroenteritis cases began early last week. Police are investigating the cause, and there is a strong suspicion that the local water company may have inadvertently pumped sewage into the town's water system. The Ministry of Interior has stated that they are working to fully clarify the circumstances, emphasizing that the contamination of drinking water could be considered a criminal offense.

This health crisis is unfolding amidst a severe heatwave, with temperatures in the country exceeding 35 degrees Celsius. The combination of contaminated water and high temperatures exacerbates the public health concerns for the affected population in Gostivar.
