North Sumatra KAHMI Urges Police to Investigate Alleged Religious Insult in Alcohol Promotion Video

The North Sumatra branch of KAHMI is demanding a thorough police investigation into a controversial promotional video for Newport alcoholic beverages that has gone viral on social media. The video has sparked outrage for linking the promotion of alcohol, which is forbidden in Islam, with a verse from the Quran (Surat Ad-Dhuha). Muhammad Taufik Umardhani Harahap, head of the Legal and Human Rights division at MW KAHMI North Sumatra, stated that the action constitutes a clear insult to Islam. He urged the national police to immediately arrest those responsible. Harahap, who is also a lawyer, emphasized that a mere apology would not suffice, asserting that law enforcement must examine the promotion for criminal elements. "This has gone too far. It cannot be resolved with just an apology anymore," he said. KAHMI also called for the investigation to extend beyond the individuals featured in the video to include those who planned, approved, and are ultimately responsible for the promotion. The organization wants to determine if the company was involved and to establish the chain of responsibility for the event that has incensed the public.
