Northern Regional Minister cautions against commentary on Dagbon chieftaincy matters

Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John Mburidiba, has issued a stern warning to media practitioners and social media users, urging them to refrain from commenting on issues surrounding the late Ya-Na Abukari II and matters of Dagbon tradition and customs. The minister emphasized that the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is closely monitoring developments and will take decisive action against anyone found to be undermining the traditions and customs of Dagbon during the ongoing mourning period.

Minister Mburidiba delivered this caution at the seventh-day mourning and Islamic prayers for the late Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, held at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi. This seventh-day observance, known as the adua, is a significant part of the traditional and Islamic mourning rites. He made it clear that any disrespect shown towards Dagbon culture, whether through traditional or social media platforms, would be met with consequences in accordance with Dagbon traditions and customs.

Urging media practitioners to uphold professionalism and discipline in their reporting of the late Overlord's funeral rites, the minister stressed the importance of handling sensitive issues like customs, traditions, and succession through the appropriate traditional institutions. He stated that these matters should not be subjected to public debate on social or mainstream media platforms. Instead, he called for support for the kingmakers in their crucial task of selecting a worthy successor to the late Ya-Na.

Minister Mburidiba also took the opportunity to remember the late Overlord for his contributions to peace, unity, reconciliation, and development within the Dagbon Kingdom. He acknowledged the vital role traditional authorities play in fostering peaceful coexistence, preserving Ghana's cultural heritage, and supporting national development. The government, he assured, remains committed to collaborating with traditional authorities to advance sustainable development and enhance the welfare of citizens. He concluded by appealing to the public, particularly the youth, to avoid publishing misleading or unverified information that could undermine traditional authority or disturb the peace and unity of the Dagbon Kingdom.
