Northern S-Bahn lines to Vienna closed for weeks due to system upgrade

Commuters traveling to Vienna from the north face significant disruptions as key S-Bahn lines shut down for over three weeks. Starting August 10, the Nordbahn, Laaer Ostbahn, and Nordwestbahn will be closed between Süßenbrunn, Gerasdorf/Wolkersdorf, and Jedlersdorf/Korneuburg, and Floridsdorf. The closure is necessary for the installation of the new ETCS Level 2 train control system, a process involving the removal of old signals and extensive testing. Passengers will be rerouted to replacement bus services, with connections strategically placed at efficient transport hubs rather than direct S-Bahn replacements. For instance, travelers from Korneuburg can choose buses to Handelskai or Praterstern, while those from Marchegg or Gänserndorf will be directed to U1 subway stations via bus. The timing of the extensive work, which also affects the main S-Bahn trunk line until September, was chosen to minimize impact during the summer months when passenger numbers drop by over 20%. The new ETCS system promises more frequent and stable train services in the future.
