Northwest Pacific a 'breeding ground' for strong typhoons, expert warns

The Northwest Pacific Ocean is a global hotspot for the formation of powerful typhoons, a phenomenon attributed to its consistently high sea surface temperatures, which often exceed 26.5 degrees Celsius. This warmth provides ample moisture for evaporation and latent heat, crucial elements for tropical cyclone development.

Meteorologist Lin De-en explained that the region's vast expanse of warm water, known as high oceanic heat content, further supports the sustained development of tropical systems. Additionally, the active monsoon trough in the area plays a significant role in nurturing these powerful storms.

The Northwest Pacific region is the area most prone to the formation of strong typhoons globally.

Consequently, the Northwest Pacific not only sees a high number of tropical depressions forming annually but also experiences the most frequent occurrences of intense typhoons, categorized as Category 4 and 5 storms. Lin noted that, on average, 25 to 30 tropical cyclones form in the region each year, with about two to four directly impacting Taiwan.

Adding to these conditions, the current year is experiencing an El Niño event, with the possibility of it evolving into a super El Niño. Lin warned that this could lead to an even larger area of warm sea surface temperatures, significantly increasing the probability of typhoon formation and the development of stronger storms. This trend suggests that the region faces increasingly severe environmental challenges in the future.
