NRRM Condemns Modu Sheriff’s Appointment to Tinubu Campaign Council

The Nigeria Rescue & Renewal Movement (NRRM) has voiced strong opposition to the inclusion of former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election. Sheriff was appointed as the Zonal Campaign Coordinator for the North-East.

NRRM National President, Comrade Aliyu Adam Usman, expressed the organization's deep concern, particularly due to historical allegations that have previously linked Sheriff to the extremist group Boko Haram. "Our concern is why a politician whose name has been associated with serious allegations concerning Boko Haram is being given the responsibility of coordinating the presidential campaign in the North-East, a region that has suffered tremendously from the insurgency," Usman stated.

The appointment, according to NRRM, reopens questions about political accountability and the suitability of individuals entrusted with significant responsibilities in the North-East. This region has endured years of insurgency and insecurity, making the selection of campaign leaders a sensitive matter. Sheriff has consistently denied sponsoring or having any connection with Boko Haram, asserting that the allegations are unfounded.

NRRM clarified that its objection does not imply Sheriff has been convicted of any offense or that the historical allegations are proven facts. Instead, the group is demanding greater scrutiny and accountability from political parties when selecting individuals for sensitive regions. "Political parties should consider not only electoral calculations but also public confidence, historical controversies and the broader interests of communities when selecting campaign leaders," the movement urged.

The APC's campaign structure places Sheriff among other senior figures coordinating the party's presidential campaign across Nigeria's geopolitical zones. As the 2027 election approaches, NRRM stated its commitment to scrutinizing political appointments and campaign structures, calling on Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability.
