NRW Justice Minister faces pressure over prison misconduct allegations

North Rhine-Westphalia's Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach is once again under intense pressure from the opposition, facing his third special committee hearing in three weeks. The latest session on Wednesday is set to address suspicions of criminal misconduct within the state's correctional facilities, with JVA Willich 1 now at the center of attention.

In mid-July, authorities conducted searches at JVA Willich 1 based on allegations of drug trafficking and bribery. The Krefeld public prosecutor's office confirmed that two prison officers are currently under investigation. Minister Limbach, responding to a request from the SPD and FDP parties, is expected to explain why the public and parliament were not informed about the raid for several weeks.

The minister has been a frequent target of criticism from opposition parties concerning a series of scandals, failures, and communication lapses within the state's justice system. Last week, SPD parliamentary group leader Jochen Ott called for Limbach's removal, citing a growing number of negative incidents. Ott pointed to the investigation into the appointment of a high-ranking official at the Higher Administrative Court, which prompted a parliamentary inquiry, as well as corruption allegations against staff in multiple institutions.

Adding to the mounting concerns, a supposed planned mutiny at JVA Siegburg two weeks prior also triggered a significant raid. However, a tip from an inmate that reportedly led to this investigation has so far not been substantiated.
