NTT Earthquake: Displaced Residents Surge to 21,552 After Data Update

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) in Indonesia has reported a significant increase in the number of displaced residents following an earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The count surged by 16,394 on Saturday, August 29, 2026, bringing the total to 21,552.

Berton Simanjuntak, Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, explained that this surge was due to updated and validated data from the quake-hit region. He noted that the number of displaced had previously dropped but increased again after the data reconciliation.

"After data validation, the number of displaced residents in Ngada, which was previously only 3,259, has now increased to 21,552. So, the number of evacuees in both centralized and independent locations is now more accurate," Simanjuntak stated during an online press conference.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake, which struck NTT on August 15, has claimed 111 lives. Analysis of the victims shows that 56.4 percent were women, and 43.6 percent were men. By age group, the elderly constituted the largest segment, followed by adults, children, teenagers, infants, and toddlers.
