NTU vice-president Kuan Jimmy Hsia leaves Singapore for new Chinese university

Kuan Jimmy Hsia, a distinguished researcher known for his work in interdisciplinary mechanics, has transitioned from his role as vice-president at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to join the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Ningbo, China. Hsia, recognized as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has built a career bridging scientific focus with administrative skill, uniting diverse fields and stakeholders.

His scientific contributions are substantial, with over 100 published papers in areas such as high-temperature deformation, micro/nano mechanics, and biomaterials. Prior to his tenure at NTU, where he also served as founding dean of the graduate college, Hsia held significant administrative positions in the United States. He was associate vice-chancellor for research at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC) and vice-provost at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

Now based in China, Hsia has joined the Eastern Institute of Technology, established in 2025 in Zhejiang province, on a full-time basis. He stated that the opportunity to build a new system was a primary motivation for his move. Hsia's career exemplifies a blend of accomplished scientific research and formidable management capabilities, making his move a notable event in academic circles.
