NTUST Becomes First UBA Team to Defeat SBL Opponent in Chang Yao Cup

The National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) achieved a significant victory in the Chang Yao Cup Future League Public Welfare Invitational Tournament, defeating the SBL's Bank of Taiwan (Black Eagles) 100-89. This win marks NTUST as the first UBA (University Basketball Association) team to overcome an SBL (Super Basketball League) opponent in the current tournament, earning them a prize of 30,000 NTD.

Despite the absence of their key center Guo Junyan, who is with the national team for the Jones Cup training, NTUST showcased strong offensive performance with six players scoring in double digits. While key guards Zha Jie and Yang Cheng-en returned, their playing time was limited due to lingering injuries. However, two first-year players stepped up as crucial contributors. Xie Zong-en, a graduate of Nanhu High School, sank 5 of 8 three-pointers to score 15 points. Yao Guan-you, from Nanshan High School, also contributed 15 points with a 5-of-7 shooting performance from beyond the arc.

Foreign student Kamy added 16 points, while Yang Cheng-en scored 14 points in 16 minutes, and Zha Jie chipped in 10 points in 18 minutes. This collective effort secured the win against the Black Eagles, who were last season's SBL runners-up.

This year's Chang Yao Cup has been reformatted from a high school event to an exchange competition between UBA and SBL teams. The tournament aims to serve as a platform for student and adult basketball players to connect, providing potential players with an opportunity to adapt to a higher intensity of competition. Following the game, Chang Yao Construction Chairman Xie Jian-guo personally visited the NTUST locker room to award the 30,000 NTD prize money to the team.
