NU Clerics Urge Cancellation of AHWA Election Rule Changes Ahead of National Conference

A group of prominent Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) clerics has issued a call to halt proposed revisions to the selection process for the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA), a crucial consultative body within the organization. This appeal comes as the National Ulama Conference and Congress draws near, with the clerics expressing concern that the proposed changes could disrupt the historical, cultural, and spiritual ties between NU and its scholars and pesantren (Islamic boarding schools).

During a gathering at the Al-Falah Ploso Islamic boarding school in Kediri, East Java, on June 20, 2026, the clerics emphasized that the AHWA should continue to be a forum for scholars, prioritizing profound knowledge, exemplary conduct, extensive service, and recognized religious authority within NU. They stated their request clearly: "The clerics ask that the regulations regarding the requirements and mechanism for electing Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) members continue to uphold the character of AHWA as a scholarly forum that relies on depth of knowledge, exemplary morals, breadth of service, and recognition of scholarship within Nahdlatul Ulama."

Specifically, the clerics are firmly against proposals to introduce new eligibility criteria for AHWA membership. These include requirements that candidates must be members of the shuriyah (executive) board and that representation should be based on geographical regions. Furthermore, they oppose any changes that would prohibit individuals from holding political office simultaneously with AHWA membership.

This call for maintaining the status quo regarding AHWA selection comes amidst ongoing dynamics within the NU leadership. Previously, on November 28, 2025, the General Chairman of the PBNU, KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, announced a rotation where Syaifullah Yusuf moved from the secretary-general position to become a PBNU Chairman following a meeting of the Tanfidziyah (executive board). The PBNU leadership has stated that the organization continues its duties without hindrance, including coordinating disaster relief efforts.
