OAS Reiterates Support for Venezuelan Communities Affected by Earthquakes

Washington D.C. – Two months after a series of powerful earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela, the Organization of American States (OAS) has renewed its commitment to supporting the affected communities. The organization also voiced deep concern over the escalating official death toll from the disaster.

OAS Secretary General Albert Ramdin conveyed his solidarity with the families still grappling with the aftermath. "Two months after the tragic earthquake in Venezuela, my thoughts remain with the affected families. Given the new magnitude of the tragedy, reflected in the painful official figures, I reiterate my deepest solidarity with the Venezuelan people in this difficult moment," Ramdin stated via his social media account.

This statement comes as Venezuelan authorities updated the victim count, reporting 6,509 fatalities. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, primarily impacted La Guaira and other central and northern regions, causing widespread damage to homes, buildings, infrastructure, and essential services. Official reports indicate that 226,696 people have received hospital care, and rescue teams have saved 6,462 individuals.

The OAS continues to play an active role in the institutional response through the Inter-American Committee for Natural Disaster Reduction, a mechanism dedicated to coordinating actions for emergencies like this. As Venezuela transitions towards recovery, international organizations and humanitarian groups maintain a presence, focusing on persistent needs and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. The United Nations has noted that while the humanitarian response is shifting towards recovery, some communities still require significant assistance. The OAS reaffirms its commitment to accompanying those affected by the earthquakes and those still facing the consequences of an emergency that continues to have a profound impact.
