Obituary: Respected Across Party Lines

Reijo Sakari Johannes Pihlamo, a deputy judge and provincial councilor, passed away in Hämeenlinna on July 9, 2026, after a difficult illness. He was 90 years old, born in Orimattila on February 22, 1936.

Pihlamo spent his formative years in Savonlinna, where his lifelong passion for sports began. He excelled in gymnastics, athletics, and tennis before becoming a successful football and ice hockey player. Alongside his athletic pursuits, Pihlamo earned a law degree in 1963 and was granted the title of deputy judge in 1966.

His professional career commenced in Lahti as a junior legal officer in the district court and assistant city lawyer from 1964 to 1970. Following a stint as deputy mayor of Forssa from 1970 to 1984, Pihlamo moved to the Provincial Government of Häme, where he served as head of administration until his retirement. In this demanding role, he was highly valued and respected across party lines for his profound knowledge and broad expertise in both municipal and state administration.

Despite the complexities of his official duties, Pihlamo possessed a rare ability to treat every individual with respect, viewing them as equals and listening attentively. His extensive sense of societal responsibility was evident in his numerous significant positions of trust. He served on the boards of organizations such as the League of Municipalities for Lastenlinna Hospital and the Municipal Pension Institution. He was also actively involved with the Red Cross, the National Defence Association, the Häme Association, and the Football Association of Finland.

During his well-deserved retirement, Pihlamo enjoyed golf and other physical activities with his wife. Their summer cottage on the shores of Lake Päijänne became a cherished family gathering place. He will be remembered as a kind gentleman with a twinkle in his eye and a benevolent attitude towards others, characterized by a positive, considerate, and conciliatory approach to life. His daughters, Sanna and Johanna Pihlamo, remember him as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
