Myanmar's military has significantly escalated attacks against civilians since a new administration took office in March, a conflict monitor reported. The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) stated that the intensified onslaught is a result of tactics deployed by the country's new military chief.

"Since the ruling junta in Myanmar reconfigured its military command structure in March, civilians have been subject to the military’s worsening repression and intensified aerial bombing campaign," ACLED said. The report noted the regular deployment of specialized groups of two to five jet fighters executing sustained airstrikes against single targets.

A Myanmar government spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. ACLED compiles its data on the ongoing conflict from media reports, local partners, UN reports, and international human rights organizations.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government in February 2021. This coup triggered a civil war that has resulted in approximately 100,000 deaths and displaced millions. Min Aung Hlaing, the new military chief, appointed Ye Win Oo, a long-time loyalist, as the military’s new commander-in-chief shortly before becoming president after an election that excluded most opposition.
