Indian authorities have suspended a police constable for firing an assault rifle in the air to disperse student protesters over the weekend. The incident took place in Siwan city, Bihar state, and is the latest in a series of youth-led protests that have prompted the federal education minister's resignation.

Videos circulating on social media, confirmed by police, show the officer in riot gear running towards a group of protesters and firing at least three shots into the air. A senior police official stated that no one was injured and the constable belonged to an intelligence unit equipped with an assault rifle.

Meanwhile, a youth protest movement known as the “cockroach” movement has called for the release of all demonstrators detained during weeks of nationwide rallies. The group issued a statement warning that any failure to release detainees or withdraw criminal cases would constitute a breach of public trust.
