Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stated that the government has begun compiling a comprehensive list of martyrs from the country's Liberation War. This effort aligns with an election pledge to ensure proper recognition and dignity for individuals who sacrificed their lives for Bangladesh's independence.

Countless people became victims of genocide during the great Liberation War. But sadly, even after so many years of independence, it has not been possible to compile an accurate and complete list of them. People who ought to have done this work engaged in politics over the matter.

During the Prime Minister’s Question Hour in parliament, Rahman acknowledged that despite many years passing since independence, an accurate and complete list of martyrs has not been compiled. He attributed this to past political maneuvering over the issue. The prime minister emphasized the importance of their sacrifices in achieving independence and reiterated the government's commitment, made in its election manifesto, to create a complete list through intensive research.

It is because of their sacrifice that we have achieved our desired independence. Realising the importance of the matter, the current government pledged in its election manifesto to make a complete list of martyrs of the Liberation War based on intensive research.

The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs is leading the implementation of this commitment. Initiatives include expert meetings with Liberation War researchers, developing a detailed action plan through stakeholder consultations, and taking necessary steps based on that plan. Rahman expressed confidence that these efforts will result in an accurate and acceptable list of genocide victims and all martyrs, honoring their sacrifices. He also mentioned ongoing efforts, involving various experts, to create a complete and accurate list of freedom fighters.
