Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) has apprehended five people, including the prime suspect, in connection with the attempted murder of BNP activist Alamgir Hossain in Pallabi. The shooting incident is reportedly linked to a dispute over a Tk 15 lakh drug-related debt.

The arrested individuals are identified as Md Rubel alias Langra Rubel, the prime suspect; Bappa alias Shakil; Hamidur alias Makhon; Parvez; and Rabbi. They were apprehended in separate operations across Savar, Gazipur, and Kushtia. During the arrests, law enforcement seized a pistol, two bullets, two magazines, the car used in the incident, another vehicle, and 1,000 yaba pills.

According to Mohammad Rakib Khan, deputy commissioner of DB's Mirpur Division, the suspects fled Dhaka after the incident. "We initially caught one suspect from Gazipur. Then we picked up one from Aminbazar, and another from Savar. One was even picked up from Kushtia," Khan stated. The preliminary investigation suggests the shooting occurred due to a conflict over money from drug trafficking, as both Alamgir and Rubel are allegedly involved in drug peddling.

DB officials identified Alamgir as a BNP leader but also a drug peddler who reportedly purchased drugs from Rubel, an alleged wholesale dealer. Alamgir owed Rubel approximately Tk 15 lakh from drug transactions, and Rubel had repeatedly demanded payment, which Alamgir allegedly delayed. The incident occurred Friday evening when assailants opened fire on Alamgir while he was at a tea stall in Pallabi, also injuring a pedestrian.

Following the attack, Alamgir's wife filed a case at Pallabi Police Station, naming Rubel as the primary suspect. This led the DB's Mirpur Division to initiate drives to arrest the accused. Deputy Commissioner Rakib Khan elaborated that Rubel had gone to collect the debt, and when Alamgir refused to pay, Rubel's associate Bappa allegedly attempted to force him into a car. As Alamgir resisted, Bappa reportedly struck him on the head and subsequently fired at him. Further details are expected to be revealed at a press conference.
