English language proficiency among students in Bangladesh appears to be a growing concern, as the pass rate for the subject in this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations fell below 75 percent in seven of the nine general education boards. The subject also lagged behind Bangla and Mathematics in eight of the nine boards.

Analysis of the education ministry's subject-wise statistics reveals significant regional disparities. Mymensingh board registered the lowest English pass rate at 66.64 percent. Sylhet followed with 69.11 percent, and Barishal with 69.24 percent. Other boards with English pass rates below the 75 percent threshold include Jashore (71.84 percent), Chattogram (72.27 percent), Dinajpur (72.91 percent), and Rajshahi (74.70 percent).

Only the Cumilla and Dhaka boards managed to achieve English pass rates above 75 percent. Cumilla recorded the highest pass rate at 81.29 percent, while Dhaka followed with 78.40 percent. In stark contrast, Bangla pass rates exceeded 90 percent in most boards. Mathematics also generally outperformed English, with the exception of the Dinajpur board, where the Mathematics pass rate was 71.05 percent, slightly lower than English's 72.91 percent.
