Authorities in Patuakhali, Bangladesh, have issued arrest warrants for two men accused of brutally beating two dogs to death, an act captured on video that subsequently went viral and sparked widespread public outrage.

The case was filed under the Animal Welfare Act, 2019, and Section 428 of the Penal Code by Dr. Md. Atiur Rahman, the Patuakhali Sadar upazila Livestock Officer. The accused, identified as Manju Hawlader, 50, and Jahir Hawlader, 45, are alleged to have tied the dogs to electric poles and beaten them with wooden sticks on July 23.

Cruelty towards animals is unacceptable under any circumstances. The case has been filed in accordance with the law. We hope the investigation will uncover the facts and those responsible will face legal action.

According to the case statement, the horrific incident occurred after Manju Hawlader demanded compensation of Tk 3,000. He claimed stray dogs, which he believed were associated with the victim's dogs, had attacked six of his ducks. The owner of the dogs, Jahangir Payda, stated that he had refused to pay, asserting his dogs were not involved and were at home during the alleged duck attack.

Dr. Rahman stated that legal action was initiated after verifying the incident through the viral video. He emphasized that cruelty to animals is unacceptable and expressed hope that the investigation would uncover the facts and bring the perpetrators to justice. Attempts to contact the accused for comment were unsuccessful, with one reportedly disconnecting the call and the other not responding to repeated attempts.
