Two years after a significant July mass uprising, Bangladesh's Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) Minister and BNP Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, reflected on the event's legacy and the current government's efforts to meet public expectations. In an interview with The Daily Star, Alamgir asserted that the uprising generated strong public demand for political and economic transformation.

He detailed how the BNP-led government, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is actively working to rebuild the nation's economy and restore stability. Alamgir emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening institutions weakened during the previous administration, which he characterized as "fascist."

Alamgir identified the restoration of democracy and the creation of an environment to protect citizens' rights as the primary successes of the July Uprising. He noted that state institutions had been severely damaged, and justice was denied to the people during the preceding period. The government is now focused on development, economic recovery, and addressing the immediate needs of the populace, acknowledging the high expectations placed upon them.

The biggest achievement of the mass uprising was the restoration of democracy and the creation of an environment in which people’s rights could be protected.

The minister also touched upon the ongoing reform discussions, the implementation of the July Charter, and constitutional changes. He mentioned the government's agenda includes restoring democratic institutions, reforming the administration, improving law and order, and alleviating economic pressures. Alamgir acknowledged that meeting these diverse expectations has significantly increased his workload.
