Dhaka police have arrested five individuals suspected of involvement in the brazen Tk 1.21 crore robbery of an employee from a filling station in Uttara on August 9. The arrests were made during coordinated drives in Dhaka and adjacent districts, according to Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The DB team also seized four pistols, 21 rounds of ammunition, and Tk 12 lakh in cash from the apprehended suspects. Islam confirmed that all five are believed to be members of a robbery gang. He indicated that detailed information regarding the case would be disclosed at a press conference. The robbery occurred around 10:30 a.m. on August 9, in front of Crowne Plaza on Airport Road. Employees of DL Filling Station were en route to deposit the substantial sum at a bank when the assailants attacked, hacking an employee before absconding with the money. The filling station is reportedly owned by Tasin Akhtar Haque, a cousin of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and nephew of former prime minister Khaleda Zia. Following the incident, Abdul Karim, the manager of the fuel pump, filed a case at the Airport Police Station against six to seven unidentified individuals.
