At least five people died and three others were injured in separate road accidents yesterday in Cox's Bazar and Jamalpur. The incidents highlight ongoing road safety concerns in Bangladesh.

Three people, including two sisters, were killed and three others injured after a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf highway yesterday afternoon.

In Cox's Bazar, a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf highway claimed the lives of two sisters, identified as Rubina Akter, 40, and Shahina Akter, 42. A third victim, an unidentified man, also died in the crash, while three other passengers sustained injuries. Police reported that the auto-rickshaw was traveling from Cox's Bazar to Ukhiya when the accident occurred. Authorities seized the truck involved, but the driver managed to escape.

Police said the auto-rickshaw, carrying six people including the driver, was travelling from Cox’s Bazar to Ukhiya when it collided with an oncoming truck.

In a separate incident in Jamalpur, two men were killed when a truck ran them over in the Sadar upazila's Digpait area. The deceased were identified as Md Nani, 60, and Md Hafiz, 55. According to police and local witnesses, the two men were standing beside the Jamalpur-Tangail highway when the truck, heading towards Jamalpur, veered off the road and struck them.
