BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has been tasked with selecting the party's candidate for Bangladesh's upcoming presidential election. The decision emerged from a meeting of the BNP standing committee, which convened at Rahman's political office in Gulshan.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Secretary General, briefed reporters after the meeting, stating that the party's top policy-making body also reviewed the nation's current political climate and internal organizational issues.

The office of the president has fallen vacant, and the Speaker is temporarily serving as the acting president. Under the law, the presidential election must be held within 90 days. The Election Commission has already begun working towards that goal and is prepared to hold the election.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP standing committee, emphasized that the Election Commission is constitutionally responsible for conducting the presidential election. He noted that the commission has already begun preparations to hold the election within the 90-day legal timeframe following the vacancy of the presidential office.

Regarding the nomination process, Ahmed confirmed that Rahman would make the final choice for the party's candidate once the election schedule is announced. Discussions also touched upon the possibility of convening a special parliamentary session, a decision that would be made in consultation with the Speaker of Parliament after the Election Commission releases the official schedule.
