Woman killed, 40 injured in Bangladesh village clash over land dispute

A violent clash over disputed land ownership between residents of two villages in Cumilla, Bangladesh, resulted in the death of one woman and injuries to at least 40 others. The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Kohinur Begum, sustained a fatal spear wound to the neck.

Confirming the death, Meghna Police Station OC Md Shahidul Islam said she was found with a spear lodged in her neck.

The conflict erupted between residents of Char Bhatera village in Titas upazila and those from Alipur and Char Binatpur villages in Meghna upazila. Tensions flared earlier in the day when two residents from Char Bhatera were allegedly assaulted and detained at the Meghna Sub-Registrar’s Office. Their subsequent rescue by villagers triggered the confrontation.

The dispute escalated into a two-hour spear battle, leaving 15 individuals from Titas and 25 from Meghna injured. The wounded were transported to local health complexes, with three critically injured victims referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care.

Authorities have deployed additional police forces to both Titas and Meghna upazilas to maintain law and order. While the situation was reported to be under control by evening, police remain stationed at the scene. An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and the deceased woman's body has been kept at the Meghna Upazila Health Complex.
