Off-road motorcyclists conquer Croatia's challenging terrain, finding limits are often mental

K. Mieliauskas and Karin are sharing their experiences from a challenging off-road motorcycle expedition through Croatia, a journey that tested their skills and resolve. After leaving the Bosnian coast, they ventured onto Hvar island, known for its rugged terrain and picturesque sea vistas.

This is exactly how I imagined this ride – inexperienced motorcyclists learn, and experienced ones improve even further. That's why I highly recommend it to people who ride off-road to try it in the mountains too.

Mieliauskas described the island's paths as "true off-road," characterized by steep, rocky trails that demanded significant effort but offered constant sea views. "No matter how high we were, we could see the sea and islands," he noted, finding the change from mountainous landscapes a pleasant one. The proximity to the sea for evening stays was also a welcome aspect, though they paused their ride due to weather conditions, deeming mountain travel in the rain inadvisable.

Croatia greeted us with heat, humidity, and very little shade. All the first day we rode through Hvar in true off-road conditions. The island is great for traveling by motorcycle, you can enjoy the sea views almost all the time, riding on steep, rocky paths that stretched high up was very good, although it required effort.

Karin, who joined Mieliauskas for the third and fourth stages of the expedition, compared the Balkan journey to their previous "Arctic Ride" to Nordkapp. While the Arctic trip tested them physically with extreme cold, the Balkan route proved more demanding technically and psychologically. "The Arctic tested us physically, while this trip tested us technically and psychologically," Karin stated. She recounted unexpected challenges, including a near-fall from a cliff and being trapped by snow on a closed road, moments that ultimately made the journey memorable.

No matter how high we were, we could see the sea and islands. For eyes that had already gotten used to the vastness of the mountains, it was a pleasant change. It was also good that in the evening, in 40 minutes, we could get to the sea for the night.

Both riders reflected on overcoming their perceived limitations. Karin mentioned their initial belief that the terrain was beyond their capabilities. "Before this trip, we were convinced that such riding was beyond our limits. After the trip, we realized that the biggest limits often exist only in our minds," she concluded. The expedition, which included German riders Tobias and Karin, also involved navigating snow-covered mountains in Montenegro, showcasing the unpredictable nature of their adventure.

In the Arctic, the biggest challenge was the constant cold. In Montenegro and Bosnia, the riding itself was much more difficult. I could probably say that the Arctic tested us physically, while this trip tested us technically and psychologically.
