Ogazi, Onojuvwevwo lead Nigeria’s 400m charge

Nigeria's strong presence in the 400m events at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is highlighted by five athletes advancing to the semi-finals. Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo lead the charge, having earned automatic qualification based on their world rankings. They are joined by Patience Okon-George, Esther Joseph, and Eddidiong Udo, who secured their spots through the preliminary heats.

In the men's 400m, Eddidiong Udo impressed in his international debut for Nigeria, winning his heat in 45.73 seconds. He will compete from lane eight in the third semi-final, while Ogazi runs from lane five in the opening semi-final.

For the women's 400m, veteran Patience Okon-George progressed automatically by finishing fourth in her heat in 53.27 seconds. She will race from lane three in the first semi-final alongside Esther Joseph, who qualified third in her heat with a time of 52.82 seconds and will run from lane four. Ella Onojuvwevwo is set to compete in lane seven of the third semi-final.

With five athletes across both the men's and women's 400m events reaching the semi-finals, Nigeria is optimistic about securing multiple places in the finals as the athletics program continues in Glasgow.
