Ogun State Orders Probe Into Building Collapse That Killed One

A two-storey building collapsed in Ajuwon, Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Monday afternoon, killing one person and narrowly sparing several occupants. The structure suffered a catastrophic failure during a severe thunderstorm, with parts of the lower floors sinking into the ground.

Eyewitnesses reported the collapse occurred around 3:00 p.m. after heavy rain and thunderstorms. Two women with their children escaped moments before the collapse, and a young man sustained minor injuries fleeing the building. Emergency responders, including various state agencies and local government departments, quickly mobilized for search-and-rescue operations.

Contractors in the vicinity also deployed heavy equipment to aid the rescue efforts. Despite initial surface searches finding no victims, traces of blood and footprints beneath the rubble led to a controlled excavation. This operation recovered the body of one deceased victim, whose identity remains unconfirmed.

While adverse weather preceded the collapse, the exact cause of the structural failure is undetermined. Governor Dapo Abiodun has ordered a comprehensive technical investigation by specialists to assess the structure, soil conditions, and construction materials. The probe will also inspect adjoining buildings for compromised integrity. The governor expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to the deceased's family, reaffirming the state's commitment to preventing similar tragedies.
