Oko Polytechnic Denies Student Deaths in Lodge Collapse

Oko Polytechnic has asserted that no students perished or became trapped in a recent building collapse. The institution's Public Relations Officer, Dr. Oguegbu Celestine Udoka, clarified that the structure was a privately owned lodge in Amaokpala, a community adjacent to Oko. This lodge housed both students and individuals not affiliated with the polytechnic.

Udoka noted that the incident occurred after the conclusion of second-semester examinations, with many students having already departed for the academic break. He emphasized that, contrary to circulating speculation, no Oko Polytechnic student has been confirmed deceased as of the statement's release. The Rector, Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie, visited the site to assess the situation and check on affected students, accompanied by student leaders and administrative staff.

Officials from the Anambra State Ministry of Works and Health were also present, monitoring rescue efforts. While several occupants have been rescued and are receiving hospital treatment, rescue teams continue searching for approximately two individuals believed to be trapped. The polytechnic leadership reiterated that these trapped individuals are not students of their institution. The focus remains on the ongoing rescue and assessment of the situation at the privately-owned lodge.
