Ohio Democratic governor candidate Amy Acton attacked at campaign event

Amy Acton was campaigning at a festival in Canfield when a man who had first attracted attention with shouted interruptions moved toward the stage and became violent. The Democratic candidate for governor escaped unharmed, but several other people suffered injuries.

Acton’s campaign said the attacker was quickly subdued by security personnel. US media reported that he was armed, with The New York Times describing two firearms. Authorities initially gave no details about how the attack unfolded or what motivated the suspect, identified in reports as 38-year-old Patrick H. from the Canfield area.

According to NBC News, Acton, who is a physician, treated at least one injured person. The broadcaster said it had photographs showing her providing assistance. Acton thanked security personnel for stopping the attacker and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

“There is no place for politically motivated violence in Ohio,” her campaign said. Republican rival Vivek Ramaswamy called the incident “completely unacceptable” and said violence had no place in politics. Outgoing Republican Governor Mike DeWine also condemned the attack.

The gubernatorial election will take place alongside the US congressional midterms on Nov. 3. DeWine is not running again. Ohio generally leans Republican, but local polling cited by US media suggests a very close contest. Acton previously served for a time as head of the state health department under DeWine, while Ramaswamy has emphasized his relationship with President Donald Trump.
