Oklahoma town's perfect wind conditions for discus throwers draw global attention, prompt rule changes

Ramona, Oklahoma, a small town, has unexpectedly become a global athletic sensation, drawing elite discus throwers to its unique geographical advantage. Dubbed "Throw Town," the location offers near-perfect conditions, with a constant wind of 45-55 km/h blowing from the ideal direction to carry the discus further.

French athlete Lolassonn Djouhan noted that approximately 90% of men's qualifying performances for major championships occur in Ramona, with athletes throwing about five meters less elsewhere. He himself would rank sixth globally with 67.52 meters if results from Ramona were excluded.

Despite the controversy, Ramona has also had positive effects. Veteran French thrower Mélina Robert-Michon, an Olympic silver medalist in 2016, found renewed joy in the sport after a disappointing experience at the Paris Olympics. Competing alongside top international specialists in Ramona reignited her desire to continue for two more seasons.

However, the surge in exceptional results has prompted World Athletics to act. New qualification rules for the 2027 World Championships stipulate that discus performances must be achieved in a traditional athletics arena to count as a direct qualifying mark, unless a prior exemption is granted. While Ramona's results will still count in world rankings, they will no longer automatically fulfill the qualification standard without special authorization. Robert-Michon has contested the measure, pointing out that windy conditions have always existed in athletics. For World Athletics, though, the issue is clear: when one location's conditions drastically alter global hierarchies, Ramona transforms from a discus paradise into a significant regulatory problem.
