Olaf Tufte memorial grows beyond initial plans

Horten Rowing Club is preparing to honor Olaf Tufte, a beloved member who died of acute cardiac arrest on July 21. The club plans a "final row" on Thursday, July 23, beginning at 5 p.m. at the clubhouse. Tufte, who joined the club at 17, was a pivotal figure both on and off the water.

The commemoration, initially conceived as a modest tribute, has expanded considerably. Club chairman Espen Thorsen stated that the club is working diligently to organize the event, welcoming all who wish to attend. Police will provide traffic and parking assistance for the public, who can observe from land as the rowers proceed in formation.

Thorsen, who has served as chairman for 18 months, recalled Tufte's instrumental role in his own appointment to the board. He described Tufte as a "power center" within the club, valuing his ambitions and ideas. The shock of Tufte's death is still settling, leaving the board to manage the significant organizational tasks.
