Olatoye misses hammer throw podium

Nigerian athlete Sade Olatoye finished eighth in the women's hammer throw final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, falling outside the medal positions despite a determined effort. The African Championships silver medallist recorded a best throw of 63.27m, which was insufficient to challenge the top contenders in a high-quality competition.

The event was dominated by Canada's Camryn Rogers, who successfully defended her Commonwealth title with a new Games record of 74.91m. New Zealand's Lauren Bruce secured the silver medal with a throw of 69.82m, and Australia's Lara Roberts took the bronze with 68.05m.

Olatoye, who had entered the competition with strong medal aspirations following a season's best throw of 70.46m, was unable to produce a mark that would place her among the medalists. She had qualified for the final after a solid performance in the qualifying round, and was considered one of Nigeria's key hopes in the field events, particularly after her silver-medal success at the 2026 African Championships in Accra.
