Oman advances in global Environmental Performance Index, strengthening Vision 2040 goals

Oman is making significant strides in environmental performance, climbing six places to secure the 49th position globally out of 180 countries in the latest Environmental Performance Index (EPI). This advancement places Oman third in the Middle East, second in the Arab world, and second among GCC states.

The Environment and Natural Resources priority within Oman Vision 2040 aims to foster robust ecological systems that protect the environment and sustain natural resources, thereby supporting the national economy. This strategic focus balances environmental, economic, and social needs within sustainable development, promoting high-quality, pollution-free environments and enhancing food and water security.

Oman's progress is directly linked to its economic and development objectives, ensuring resource sustainability and driving emerging sectors like the green and circular economies. Key indicators showing improvement include the Oman Water Index, the share of renewable energy in total consumption, and the EPI itself. Notably, Oman ranked first globally in sustainable solid waste management, clean household fuel, sulfur dioxide emissions trends, species habitat, and open-water trawling.

Looking ahead, Oman has set ambitious targets to be among the top 40 countries by 2030 and reach the top 20 by 2040. These goals underscore a deep commitment to environmental enhancement, resource conservation, and the well-being of its citizens. The advancement is attributed to concerted national efforts by the Environment Authority and collaborating institutions, supported by international partnerships that ensure data quality and methodological alignment.
