Oman continues monitoring, responding to oil pollution along coastal areas

Oman's Environment Authority is engaged in continuous monitoring and response operations to address an oil pollution incident impacting its coastal areas. The latest assessments reveal that roughly 12 kilometers of coastline in the Ras Madrakah region are currently affected by the pollution.

Field teams are actively working to mitigate the impact on the affected coastline. Importantly, significant traces of pollution have not been detected at other monitored locations. Furthermore, updated monitoring data confirms that the oil slick has not reached the shores of Masirah Island, although the island's southern part lies within a potentially at-risk zone.

In the sea, the oil slick continues its trajectory offshore, moving southeast of the Wilayat of Masirah and heading towards the open sea. Authorities are closely tracking its movement, taking into account changing marine and weather conditions. This ongoing surveillance aims to predict and manage the slick's path effectively.

Concurrently, the Food Safety and Quality Center is conducting rigorous field monitoring, inspections, and laboratory testing to guarantee the safety of fishery products. This includes monitoring fish landing sites, seafood processing facilities, and markets, as well as tracking catch origins. Samples are being collected and tested to ensure consumer safety. These comprehensive measures are part of Oman's integrated response to protect its marine ecosystems and public health.
