Oman raises car window tinting limit to 50% to combat summer heat

Oman's motorists and auto workshop managers are welcoming a revised traffic law that permits up to 50% vehicle window tinting. The change aims to make driving more comfortable during the country's intense summer, when temperatures can reach nearly 46 degrees Celsius.

The Royal Oman Police issued a public advisory clarifying the regulations, stating that all vehicle windows except the front windshield are eligible for tinting. The maximum allowable tint for side and rear windows is now 50%, an increase from the previous 30% limit. Vehicles with factory-installed tinted windows are permitted if they maintain a minimum light transmission of 30%. Matte or non-glossy wraps and paint finishes are also allowed, provided they retain some shine or reflectivity.

Suresh Kumar, a manager at an auto workshop in Wadi Kabir, highlighted the benefits of quality window tinting. "Car tint films are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a thermoplastic polymer that helps absorb heat, provides thermal insulation and filters harmful ultraviolet rays," he explained. Kumar emphasized that in a region with extreme summer temperatures, quality tinting is essential for privacy, reducing heat, and protecting occupants from UV exposure.

Kumar noted a rise in demand for window tinting services, with his workshop receiving two to three orders daily. He also advised motorists to prioritize quality, warning that low-quality films can bubble, change color, reduce visibility, and damage glass. Premium tinting materials, he added, ensure better heat rejection, improved visibility, and long-lasting performance even in harsh climates.
