Omiš Appeals for Aid as Wildfire Displaces Residents and Hospitalizes 14

A fierce wildfire, fueled by strong winds, erupted in Lokva Rogoznica, Croatia, on August 14, 2026. The blaze has devastated several settlements, including Ivašnjak, Staro Selo, Pod Vajle, Nemira, Stanići, and Medići, with houses reported destroyed.

Emergency services are working tirelessly to contain the fire. As of this morning, 286 firefighters, supported by 93 vehicles and four Canadair CL-415 aircraft, were engaged at the fire site. The intensity of the fire has led to the hospitalization of 14 individuals in Split, with 10 currently in intensive care.

The City of Omiš has issued an urgent appeal to local restaurateurs for assistance, requesting donations of food and warm meals for those displaced by the fire. "Every help is precious," the city stated, expressing gratitude to all who are contributing during this difficult time.

Reception centers have been set up to accommodate evacuees. These include the Ribnjak Sports Hall in Omiš, the Gripe Sports Center Hall in Split, and the "Stjepan Ivičević" Elementary School in Makarska. Evacuees are urged to proceed only to these designated locations and to follow the instructions of the Civil Protection Headquarters and relevant authorities.
