One Dead as Early Morning Inferno Razes Buildings in Delta Community

A devastating early morning inferno tore through Bomadi-Overside, the commercial heart of Bomadi Local Government Area in Delta State, Nigeria. The blaze, which erupted between 4:25 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday, consumed five buildings, resulting in the tragic death of one individual and the destruction of property valued at millions of naira.

It was shortly after 4 a.m. today when I was awakened by my Hausa neighbours who were making some unusual noise, so I went out to see what was happening. Upon stepping outside, I saw their foam ablaze and they were in a frenzy. Then I exclaimed, ‘There is a fire in the building, and you are not shouting to alert the neighbourhood.

The fire specifically impacted traders at the bustling Bomadi-Overside market, a vital gathering point for various riverine communities. The deceased has been identified as J.T. Christopher, whose body was reportedly burnt beyond recognition. Survivors recounted the harrowing experience, with one resident, Mrs. Esther Thomas, stating she was awakened by distressed noises from neighbors shortly after 4 a.m.

The fire’s strength was overwhelming, and we couldn’t put it out. It consumed an entire 12-room apartment and other surrounding buildings.

"Upon stepping outside, I saw their foam ablaze and they were in a frenzy," Mrs. Thomas described. She managed to save some clothes but found the fire quickly spreading to her own room. Other neighbors, like Mr. Kurō-asain Tamaraukuro, attempted to fight the flames with water from the river but were overwhelmed by the intensity. He noted that a 12-room apartment and surrounding structures were completely engulfed.

Our neighbours have lost all their livelihoods, and I wish to use this medium to appeal to our governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Hon. Dagidi Andaye, to come to the aid of our neighbours. I urge Mr. Chairman to also visit the scene of the incident.

Residents are now appealing for urgent assistance from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Chairman of the Bomadi Local Government Council, Hon. Dagidi Andaye. Mr. Doutimiariye Ndakwe, a former vice chairman of the community's Perefōū quarters, echoed this plea, urging emergency response agencies to address the victims' immediate needs. An elderly neighbor, Ma Stella Tonkiye, also made a heartfelt appeal for government support.
