One Dead, One Rescued After Canoe Capsizes on Ontario Lake

A tragic canoe incident on Stewart Lake has resulted in one fatality and one rescue, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The capsizing occurred on Saturday evening in Georgian Bay Township. Police responded to a report of an overturned canoe approximately 40 feet from the shore. Two individuals were in the canoe when it overturned. One person was successfully rescued by a passing boater, but the other individual went underwater and did not resurface.

Searchers located the body of the 31-year-old victim from Mississauga on Sunday. The Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service are involved in the investigation. The OPP is using this incident to remind the public about the critical importance of water safety. They urge all boaters to wear properly fitted lifejackets, check weather conditions before departing, and ensure all necessary safety equipment is readily accessible.
