One in 50 Million: US Fishing Boat Catches Bicolored Lobster, Donates to Aquarium

In a remarkable stroke of luck, a fishing vessel operating off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, has brought ashore an extraordinary specimen: a lobster boasting a striking two-coloration. The 'Timothy Michael' fishing boat, part of the Wellfleet Shellfish Company, made this rare find on April 16th in the waters near Cape Cod.

This particular lobster, a stunning blend of red and black, represents an anomaly of nature, with experts estimating the odds of such a genetic mutation occurring at a mere 1 in 50 million. The discovery has generated considerable excitement, not just for its rarity but for the company's decision to share this natural wonder with the public.

Instead of heading to the market, the two-toned crustacean has been donated to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium. While the aquarium undergoes renovations, the lobster will be temporarily housed and cared for at the marine biology laboratory of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Woods Hole.
